Review Huawei Ascend P6 »
Huawei launched the thinnest smartphone to date, the Ascend P6.

The Chinese maker Huawei, even though it is one of the largest electronics companies in the world, is currently not a household name because the company has been engaged mainly in b-to-b electronics supply business. The brand recognition may about to change, with Huawei's most ambitious consumer mobile phone yet.

In a large media launch event in central London, Huawei unveiled the Ascend P6. The event, planned in remarkably similar fashion after Samsung's press even a few years back, drew world-wide attention because of this highly anticipated, strategically leaked, new phone.

The Ascend P6 is the best effort by Huawei yet. It looks and feels like an iPhone, and yet it is thinner and lighter. The phone's construction feels surprisingly sturdy. The Ascend P6 is powered by the latest Android operating system, and Huawei built its own user interface upon it.

The phone has most of the specifications that the tech community would expect from a flagship device of a major manufacturer: 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 2GB RAM, 4.7in 1,280x720 HD LCD display, 8MP main camera, etc.

Two features definitely stand out: the thinness and the 5MP front camera. First, the phone is, so far, the thinnest smartphone, and it is, emphasized here again, thin. The phone's construction may already be deeply analyzed by Apple and Samsung's engineers. Second, the 5MP front camera would capture self-portraits with a lot of pixels, and offer quality 720p video conferencing capabilities.

The biggest drawback of the Ascend P6 is its lack of LTE (4G). Most casual and fashion-sensitive phone users, for whom this phone seems to be built, would not mind the absence of the LTE capability, but as far as the tech critiques and influencers go, this may be a big red flag.

Huawei may not be able to sell the Ascend P6 like a blockbuster, but it certainly drew a lot of attention. As consumers start to notice Huawei products, the next iteration of Huawei's flagship may be well-positioned to compete in the same arena as the iPhone and the Galaxy.
