At the 2014 CES in Las Vegas, Samsung made it official: you no longer need a laptop to do your work. The Samsung Galaxy NotePRO with its gigantic 12.2-inch screen and the S Pen, powered by the fastest commercially available mobile processor and 3GB of RAM, can successfully satisfy almost all computing needs.
The folks who do need the computing power of desktops or servers for tasks such as heavy data analysis or intricate video editing will continue to use them, but almost all laptop users can switch to tablets without much disservice.
The benefits of switching from a laptop to the NotePRO would be the style, increased portability, great screen quality at 2560x1600 resolution, and cooler apps enabled by the tablet's GPS and sensors. The productivity apps built into the NotePRO (or easily downloadable) can almost seamlessly work with Microsoft Office files. And not having to deal with Windows based software's cost, sluggishness and hassle of frequent updates may be the ultimate benefit.
The biggest drawback of switching is the apparent lack of keyboard, but that can be easily remedied by attaching one via USB or Bluetooth.
Samsung's stylus, the S Pen, is a "smart" pen, and once the users learn all it could do, it would become a great tool for performing a lot of tasks without having to touch and leave fingerprint smudges on the screen.
With the introduction of the Galaxy NotePRO, Samsung also made a deal with various content creators, including the NY Times and Bloomberg, to offer free long-term subscriptions worth of $700 retail.
One thing that this NotePRO is not for is using it while holding it the whole time. At 1.65 pounds, it does get a bit heavy (unless the user is looking for some casual arm exercises). This device is designed as a laptop replacement, and for that purpose, the Galaxy NotePRO is the best in the market so far.
The next generation wish list would be: paper thinness, built-in laser keyboard, and multi-core 64-bit processor.
